A Lego BattleTech Robot, The Mad Cat

ccy's Lego BattleTech Mad Cat

Some of the most iconic mechs ever designed belong to BattleTech (MechWarrior). Some of the most popular BattleMechs are the Warhammer, Locust, Catapult, Marauder, Summoner (Thor), and arguably the Urbanmech. The most famous is the Mad Cat (Timber Wolf) mech. This mech is usually on the over of BattleTech books, and used in all sorts of promotional stuff. It also happens to be one of the best BattleMechs, a “jack of all trades” model. It packs a deadly arsenal, while preserving the agility of the smaller mechs. Flickr user “ccy” has created an extremely accurate Lego BattleTech Mad Cat. All of the weapons are present, the Gauss Rifles, LRM-10s, and the ER Medium Lasers. Even the iconic chicken legs are recreated perfectly in Lego.

The only thing that is compromised in this Lego Mad Cat is the cockpit. In the source material the cockpit is rather large, taking up most of the center body space. Lego has a vast selection of cockpit pieces but there are not very many oversized options. The awesome thing is that in the Lego model the cockpit (although smaller) looks great. There is even room for a pilot.

Borris, Momo, Admiral Horrace, & Arnold: Lego Pirate Jigbots + Argali the Iron Jigbot

Lego Pirate Jigbots

“Avast ye bots big and small!
We be the jigbot pirates, proud and tall.
Our heads be flappy and our pay is crappy.
But the job is fun! with lots of Rum!
So we be pillaging yee all.”

If you have ever wondered what you could use your Lego Star Wars planets (+ Death Star) for then look no further. You can create a Jigbot. These surprisingly cute robots are a combination of Lego pieces, Bionicle pieces, and Technic pieces. These Lego pirate Jigbots are the result of a team build, specifically Team Jigsaw, which consists of Simon Liu, Nick V, Lego Junkie, and Legonardo Davidy. Borris the Pirate was created in 2013, and a little over a year latter was joined by Momo the Pirate, Admiral Horrace, and Arnold the Pirate.

LegonardoDavidy's Lego Jigbot Admiral Horrace

“Sailing the seven seas taking, searching for pirate scum and bringing their days of looting and pillaging to an end, recruiting them as toilet cleaners and barrel makers for his majesty the King. More barrels = more ale, and the toilets… yeah. Pirate Jigbots beware!” — Legonardo Davidy

LegoJunkie's Lego Jigbot Momo The Pirate

Momo the Pirate is a typical ragtag bandit. Put together with a more random assortment of parts then the other Jigbots.

NickV's Lego Jigbot Borris The Pirate

“Although intended for destruction and world domination, Borris has chosen to instead live his life as a free-spirited, swash-buckling pirate. With his rusty cutlass and his bottle ‘o rum always at hand, nothing excites Borris more than adventure, trespassing and pillaging minifig towns.” — Nick V.

The only odd ball is Argali the Iron Jigbot. Not actually part of the Pirate Jigbots. Argali was originally built for an Iron Builder Competition.

“Argali is a peculiar fellow, who enjoys classy activities such as kite-sailing, scarf making, and abstract conversation. Also known as the Giver of Bagpipes, Argali is not mentally stable, and can not be trusted.”

Tarakia – Master of Mind. A Lego Tao Hukia.

Nick V's Lego Tarakia Master Of Mind

“Tarakia is usually described unfavourably as reckless, hyperactive or short-tempered. She always seems to be the first to jump into combat, never waiting to listen for direction or a plan. However this couldn’t be further from the truth; utilizing her psychic communication powers, the Toa Hukia are constantly linked together and able to work perfectly as a team. Tarakia is also the group’s weapons expert and interrogator. Owing to her fearsome reputation, few enemies can hide secrets from her.” — Nick V.

Robots and Lego are a natural fit. The once successful Bionicle is getting ready to make a come back. In a lot of ways Bionicle is just a starting point for your own creations. With the right pieces and an active imagination one can create something awesome. This Lego robot is the creation of Nick V. It is titled Tarakia – Master of Mind and it is an example of what can be created with Lego. If Lego could release something like this as an official set, it would sell like crazy. But, this type of work is usually super delicate and will not hold up to play. Nick V. had been creating a whole series of these robots, and each one is super detailed and has a full backstory documented.

Lego Civilization: Beyond Earth, Worker Mech Unit

Lego Civilization Beyond Earth Worker Mech

Lego Ideas (CUUSOO) has been a huge success for Lego. Most of the proposed projects involve established properties that need to be licensed in order to release them. The program has been so popular that a few of the projects have even been supported by companies who would like to see their properties licensed through Lego. For instance, Lego Minecraft. It is super rare that a company actually supports and even submits their own projects into Lego Ideas. Here is an example of such a project.

Firaxis Games has submitted a Lego Ideas project based on their Civilization series of video games. The set would include a Worker Mech based on the Civilization: Beyond Earth unit. The mech would be accompanied by a worker, a minifigure with options to be either male or female. The designer, AndrewClark2, built 180 of these sets as a studio gift on the release of the game. Since this has been produced (although not officially) a set of instructions have been drafted. The whole build only uses 187 Lego pieces. Even if this never makes it through the Lego Ideas process, it is an extremely nice gesture from AndrewClark2 and Firaxis Games to share.

Lego Civilization Beyond Earth Instructions

“When human beings settle alien planets, they’re going to need to build farms, quarries, paddocks for alien wildlife, habitation domes, and generators. Who gets to do all that hard work? The Worker unit! Designed by concept artist Mike Bazzell, the worker unit in Civilization: Beyond Earth will change equipment depending on its current job. This model is based on the front end loader, used to build quarries and mines. This Worker is ready to tackle any world, from harsh arid planets to miasma-laden fungal planets.”

This Lego Hulkbuster Armor Is Ready To Fight The Hulk

KaLor's Lego Hulkbuster, Iron Man

Most Lego Hulkbuster Armor builds focus on size. Most of them end up towering over the official Hulk figure. Although there is a certain charm to seeing a such a massive Iron Man, having a more proper scale version is awesome. Over on Lego Ideas, Ka.Lor has proposed their version of the Hulkbuster. By not having to design a full pilot cage for an Iron Man Minifigure, Ka.Lor is able to focus on mobility and structure. The end result is a Hulkbuster that is amazingly tiny, yet still incredibly imposing. Some of the details here are great, such at the Lego binoculars being used for fingers, Minifig hands being used for various clips, and even tiny Lego pistols being used to define the chest shape.

A Chibi Gundam Made with Lego

Moko's Lego Chibi Gundam 01

Lego and robots are a very popular theme (see here). Sometimes these themes combine to create something cool. This chibi styled Lego Gundam (という訳でガンダム。初代ガンダム。), by Moko, is one of those prefect Lego MOCs. The cute little mecha features SNOT techniques that create a remarkably articulated model. The Mobile Suit needs all of this movability if it is going to survive the war. Lego has been releasing robot themed models at in increasing rate. Maybe someday something as complicated and sleek as this Chibi Gundam will have an official release. We can only hope.

Moko's Lego Chibi Gundam 03

Not only does this Gundam come with a huge gun, and shield but Moko went as far as creating a whole arsenal. It appears that there is access to two sniper rifles, two “light sabers,” a huge mace, and a ball-and-chain. Nothing can stop this robot.

The Cutest Lego Mini Power Loader, From Aliens

Grantmasters's Lego Aliens Mini Power Loader

The Power Loader from Aliens is one of those perfect designs for Lego. All sorts of attempts have been made, in all sorts of sizes. The newest, and maybe cutest is the Mini Power Loader, created by Grantmasters. The goal was to create a Power Loader that get close to the Minifigure scale. This is a great example of non-standard Lego techniques being used to create something awesome. Check out Ripley’s legs, they have been pulled off the standard Lego legs. This lets Ripley and the Power Loader pose in many more dynamic positions. Which will come in handy when fighting Alien Queens.

Shoot ‘n Loot with this Lego Claptrap from Borderlands

Jerac's Lego Borderlands Claptrap

Are you waiting for Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel to download? Excited to butt stomp the moon, and bound through low gravity? Ready to hear Handsome Jack’s side of the story? Then you should be just as excited about these Lego Claptrap units created by Jerac. These three robots showcase some extremely impressive Lego skills. Check out how those arms are created, with a combination of levers and technic pins. And, admire the subtle sloping geometry. It is a wonder that it is all held together. One thing is certain, these Claptraps are dangerously fragile (physically and mentally).

The Neo-Blacktron Alienator: A reboot of Lego set 6876

Jeremy Williams's Lego Blacktron Alienator

“You cannot hide, Federation!”

If one Lego theme could sum up the 1980’s it would be Blacktron. Jeremy Williams has created the Alienator, a Neo-Blacktron reboot of official Alienator (6876) from 1988. The iconic black and yellow color scheme, the laser gridded star field, and the clunky design is all perfectly represented. The first thing to be updated were the swinging skies which are now four hydraulic legs. One of the best features of this walker is the hidden Pulse Generator hidden in the central body.
