Normandy SR2 — Mass Effect Lego

The Mass Effect Trilogy is one of the most famous modern RPGs of all time. The epic story of Commander Shepard and his legendary crew have inspired an almost unparalleled amount to fan art. Including countless Lego models. The main focus for most Lego builders is the sleek Normandy SR2 starship. The SR2 is the successor of the cutting edge SR1. Making its first appearance in Mass Effect 2, this Cerberus built ship has no comparison, everything about it is lightyears ahead of its closest competition.

Benny Brickster, of Flickr, took over seven months to complete this MOC. The sleek design is especially troublesome, and was recreated here without being too bulky. Curves are always hard to do correctly in Lego, but the larger scale of this spaceship allows it to keep a smooth profile. Also note the beautiful Normandy text, and the SR2 logo; completely made out of standard Lego bricks.

Lego Star Trek: Resistance Is Futile

“We are the Borg. Lower your shields and surrender your ships. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile.” — Star Trek: First Contact

Star Trek: Into Darkness is looking like a great film, possibly with the most realistic lens flare ever. And, although everybody’s favorite Klingons are rumored to be in the film, everybody’s second favorite villains are missing… the Borg. They are coming soon, resistance is futile.

Halfbeak, of Flickr, created Resistance is Futile. The greebling technique here is used to full effect, rendering the Borg Cube in frightening detail. In all that mess can you spot the clockwork key? Then, by creating a mini build of the Starship Enterprise the illusion of a gigantic Cube is enforced. Using a white Lego minifig torso for the body of the Enterprise is genius, and solves a lot of connection problems that arise when working at this scale.

Iron Man’s Laboratory / Hall of Armor

The Iron Man Hall of Armor has proven to be extremely popular. Here at LegoGenre, it is currently the number one search term. Who would ever have guessed?

Although the Lab & Hall of Armor have an abbreviated representation by Lego with the Malibu Mansion Attack set, it seems that people still want more. The good news is that it looks like Lego has noticed the popularity for a Lego Iron Man Lab & Hall of Armor. Because, they are offering up the next best thing to another play set: free instructions for building your own. These instructions are offered up as a PDF with full color and good detail.

Now, thanks to Lego, you too can build Iron Man’s Hall of Armor, and create hilarious stop motion videos.

Doctor Who

Check out this fun Doctor Who MOC built by Bruceywan on Flickr. The Eleventh Doctor is sporting a cool red fez and a Sonic Screwdriver. The snot techniques here are all top notch with no stud unaccounted for. The use of the Lego fez for the bow tie is brilliant. This build is a part of the Iron Builder challenge, which is a Builders’s Lounge sponsored competition. The challenge piece is the dark red cone (fez) and is currently in Round 6: BruceyWan vs. CMaddison.

Steam-Bots: The Steampunk Robot

Little tiny robots are one of the best genres of MOC builds, and when someone changes it up a little it can really stand out. For instance these Steam-Bots don’t look very deadly, but the steampunk robot on the left has a chainsaw for a hand. The choice of color and pieces is really nice, the ice cream for steam and the gold/brown color scheme really helps sell these robots. Hope you didn’t spend all your money on your new top hat and mustache cream, as robot insurance would come in handy here.

Ryloth Refinery Battle

Star Wars: Clone Wars is an interesting series, that doesn’t inspire as many MOC builds as the other Star Wars themes. This scene jumps out at you for its excellent use of color. The gooey green looking toxic water, and the tall dangerous looking red tanks. It all has a wonderfully industrious feel to it.

Ender’s Game: Battle Room

A new movie is on its way based on the Ender’s Game novel by Orson Scott Card. Most of the scenes in the upcoming film look like they have been exaggerated based on what is written in the novel. While this could be great for the film, one major difference is the Battle Room. It always seemed like an enclosed room, that is pretty nondescript, filled with stars and full of teams of students trying to freeze each other. Best of all it is located in the center of the Battle School space station, where gravity is at a minimum.

A great example of this is in Battle Room Gymnasium, which gets a lot of the details right for a build that is not technically a recreation of the Battle Room from Ender’s Game (just influenced from it). From the stars (black squares) to the enemy gate. And, best of all the directionless feeling that fighting in space has. Remember the enemy’s gate is down.

H.U.L.K. Exo Suit

Ever since Aliens, the dream of a working Exo Suit has taken up many a person. Although still a few years away from that reality, you can build your own mecha in Lego.

That’s what Flickr user TrapleS did with his H.U.L.K. Exo Suit. Every single piece of this MOC is beyond me. The scifi robot genre of Lego builds is incredibly technically advanced. Just look at all those Technic parts, pins, and joints. All of these pieces come together in a very expressive mecha suit.

With the rumors that Lego has picked up the Simpsons license, there was some hope that they would also be interested in Futurama. But, with the recent news of Comedy Central canceling the show, it seems like that possibility of a Lego license would also be canceled.
