Lego CUUSOO 005 Review, NASA’s Mars Rover Curiosity Go!

It is official, NASA’s Mars Rover Curiosity is ready to… launch… as the next Lego CUUSOO project. Coming as no surprise to anyone (they have already approved 3 other science based CUUSOO projects). Curiosity was one of three projects considered, the other two were a Star Wars Jawa Sandcrawler, and a Portal 2 theme. No word was said about the Sandcrawler, but there is a little bit said about Portal 2. I will not ruin the surprise (don’t get too excited), you will have to watch the whole video to learn more.

Other CUUSOO news, still no official word or update on the upcoming Back to the Future Delorean Time Machine. Doc. Brown is getting impatient.

Lego Marvel Super Heroes E3 Trailer

It is E3 this week, which means there is an overwhelming amount of video game news. The Lego Marvel Super Heroes video game is coming out soon and it doesn’t want to be left out of the festivities. New details and a new trailer debuted this week, reaffirming early impressions that this will be a great game. The first piece of great news is that it will feature open-world gameplay, like Lego City Undercover, and also include the traditional platforming gameplay, like Lego Star Wars. It has also been confirmed that New York city, Manhattan, and Loki’s Lair will all be playable locations.

Lots of Marvel characters will be featured in the game, with Wolverine, Captain America, Johnny Storm (Human Torch), Mr. Fantastic, Thor, Deadpool, the Hulk, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Sandman, and Loki all getting the digital Lego treatment. More characters will be announced closer to the release date.

Harry Potter Meets A Rancor

“Hagrid has always been obsessed with strange and dangerous creatures…but his newest pet may prove to be more than he bargained for!”

Lego Harry Potter has always seemed like a theme that hasn’t received the proper respect it deserves. And, that is why it is good to see a very well made video mixing up Harry Potter and Star Wars. I especially like the use of non-Lego parts in the backgrounds, they seem to blend in very well.

Lego Star Wars: Ewok Village (10236)

This week Twitter was lighting up with messages and rumors about an upcoming Star Wars: Ewok Village set. It didn’t take long for Lego to confirm these rumors. With 1,990 pieces and a price tag of $249.99 this is a massive Ewok Village. The whole set comes with 16 minifigures. 7 of which are exclusive designs and only available in this village. The new set will be available for purchase from Lego Shop@Home in September.

The Ewok Village is built up around 4 trees and suspended in the canopy. There is so much brown and green that anyone making landscapes should be interested. Most Lego Star Wars sets are really cool starships and speeders, and it is rare to get a diorama or landscape based build. The set has been designed to replicate all of your favorite scenes from Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. From the capture of Luke, Han, Chewbacca and Leia to the false worship of C3PO. Lego has even included details to help replicate the celebration after the Death Star is destroyed, for instance a set of drums made of recycled Stormtrooper helmets.

Hopefully more of these massive set pieces are coming in the future.

Lego City: Undercover

If you happen to be one of the lucky few people out there to own a WiiU, Lego City: Undercover is considered one of the best games available. It has been 8 years since TT Games first released Lego Star Wars and many people think that the formula is wearing thin. The co-op action-adventure game does many things right, but the same complaints (wonky camera, bad AI, etc.) have haunted the series for years. And, although these complaints are valid, overall the Lego series of video games are some of the most charming available.

TT Games and TT Fusion surprised many people by creating an open world action-adventure game. Lego City: Undercover is a breath of fresh air. It has successfully merged the gameplay of more adult titles such as Grand Theft Auto into a more friendly package. It is also rare to see a Lego game not based on a licensed property, and this may be the first video game to do one of the core Lego themes justice. Lego City has never been this interesting before.

Atlas and P-Body from Portal 2

ATLAS and P-Body, also known as Blue and Orange, are everybody’s favorite playable robots from Portal 2. They were created by GLaDOS as a means to replace human subjects in the Cooperative Testing Initiative at the Aperture Science Enrichment Center.

Fun robot fact: ATLAS (the round one) is male, and P-Body (the tall one) is female.

Here they have been recreated in Lego. The overall shape and design match up pretty well when compared to the source material. A difficult achievement, considering how intricate and non-Lego like their design is. This MOC is a perfect example in how integrating rubber bands into your builds can help you build the impossible. Check out the rubber bands wrapping around their core, and delicate joints.

BrickPi: Lego Bricks with a Raspberry Pi Brain @ Kickstarter

BrickPi is a simple system for joining together Lego bricks with the Raspberry Pi. The Raspberry Pi is a super small open-source computer that is powerful enough to play high definition video. The standard connections available are USB, RCA, LAN, Audio, HDMI, GPIO, and SD Cards. With this system you will be able to hook a Raspberry Pi computer into the Lego Mindstorms sensors; specifically 3 motors and 4 sensors. These things combined can be used to create smart robots. BrickPi is looking for funding on Kickstarter, check out the video for more details:

BrickPi will be powered by Arduino and Python. As an added plus, the designers will be providing examples and libraries for all your robotic needs.

Lego Iron Man’s Suit

How does Tony Stark get his Iron Man suit on? Keshen8 has a good idea on how that would go, with Lego Iron Man’s New Suit. With extra smooth animation, good sound effects & dubbing, and even some special effects that all combine to create a great Iron Man spoof.

Also check out the background. The whole thing takes place in the Hall of Armor, which is probably one of those sets everyone wishes Lego would create.

Lego Marvel Super Heroes Trailer

It looks like a new Lego game is due out this October. This time the theme will be Lego Marvel Super Heroes. The goofy style that TT Games has perfected over this past decade looks like a perfect fit.
