A Deep Dive With A Lego Abyssal Fish

A Deep Dive With An Abyssal Fish - Lego MOC

There are some weird fish living in the deepest darkest trenches in our oceans. The Abyssal Fish is well known for its bioluminescent lure and its oversized jaws. The ocean is so dark, that any light can attract all sorts of fish and creatures. Almost like a fishing pole with a light bulb for a lure. Prey cannot avoid their curiosity and swim right into its mouth. This Lego Abyssal Fish, created by Luis Peña, is an excellent recreation of the deep sea creature. Using neon transparent green bricks works well as the bioluminescent features. The overcrowded and oversized teeth are well done. But the best detail are the Lego sausages being used for gills. I certainly wouldn’t want to catch one of these creatures when fishing.

A Giant Tiger Prawn Made Out Of Lego

A Giant Tiger Prawn Made Out Of Lego

Prawns are crustaceans that live in salt water, and fresh water. Although the Tiger Prawn prefers salt water. Often interchangeable with large shrimp. This is the “Giant Tiger Prawn” Lego MOC designed by midian454. The designer was inspired to build these prawns after thinking that the Lego Minifigure microphone piece looked like an eye. Which you can see being used as one here. Two versions were built, the brown and blue one is how the prawns look alive, while the orange and yellow version is how they look after being cooked. Too bad for the orange one. A display stand has been designed specifically so that when the prawn is displayed the tail is curled up underneath the model, the Lego prawn can be also be removed easily. That way, everything can be unfolded.

A 28 Gun Black Seas Barracuda – A Lego Pirate Ship

A 28 Gun Black Seas Barracuda - A Lego Pirate Ship

The Black Seas Barracuda is perhaps the most famous Lego pirate ship to sail the brick seas. There is the original 1989 version, the 2002 re-release, and a mini version in 2018, and the ship wrecked version in 2020. Thats a lot of plunder. If you ever wondered if the ship could be even bigger and more detailed that would probably be this version. This Black Seas Barracuda is a “UCS Flagship” inspired Lego MOC created by Brick Ninja.

A 28 Gun Black Seas Barracuda - Time Isles - Pirates

This version of the Black Seas Barracuda has a lot more room for an extra mast, and set of sails. Even the flags are have been updated. It is loaded with 28 cannons, which means this galleon can go up against even the best equipped Imperial ships. Even the row boat is brick built. This ship is bigger in every dimension. The whole ships is a bit wider. There are two levels below deck and even a larger captains cabin. The whole build also contains a lot less Lego studs exposed to the elements.

The Barracuda also comes with an elaborate display. A raised up base, showing the ocean waves, and the deadly sea life beneath. The waves in particular are extremely well done. There is also an option to display the ship firing cannons. The Lego explosions looks great, with smoke and fire propelling the cannon ball away from the ship. Even the Lego waves are reacting to the cannon fire.

A Lego Bottlenose Dolphin

A Lego Bottlenose Dolphin

Here is a Lego Bottlenose Dolphin created by Ken Ito. This Lego dolphin has really captured the overall shape and spirit of those wonderful mammals. The two tone color scheme works well and the divide is surprisingly clean. The end result looks as playful and mischievous as the real thing. The dolphin is perfectly displayed with a beautiful stand. The reductive water and waves works well, and most importantly it matches the style of the main attraction. It does not steal the focus. A well placed transparent brick helps sell the illusion that this dolphin is playfully jumping over a wave.

Underwater At The Coral Island Sandbar

W Navarre Lego Coral Island Sandbar

If it wasn’t for the Pirate business, this Lego Coral Island Sandbar looks like a great place to vacation and scuba dive. Too bad, these Pirates are in the middle of some sort of hostage exchange. I would bet this doesn’t end well. Of course the stand out feature of this Lego MOC are not the Pirates but the island. The underwater part is especially nice. By using the newer pastel colors and putting a transparent blue ceiling the effect of water/underwater is achieved. The use of azure Lego Minifigure hands as some of the coral is perfect. This scene is teeming with Lego sea life.

Tan’thu The Ancient Entity – A Horrific Lego MOC

Micah Beideman Horrific Lego Tan'thu MOC

Lovecraftian Horrors are something you do not see so much in Lego. There has been a rise in their interest and Lego has even tried creating their own (Doctor Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum – 76060). Here is Micah Beideman’s horrific Lego monster, titled Tan’thu: The Ancient Entity. This MOC does a great job of creating the bulging and bulbous body. The eyes and tentacles display a lot of “inside-out” Lego tires. A somewhat popular technique in MOCs these days. The gaping maw is technically impressive. The repetition of elements works extremely well. And, by including a ship (at the center of the display) acting as a reference the humongous size of this Entity is presented.

If you were wondering exactly what was going on behind the scenes to create this beast. Check out the assembly of some of the eyes below. There are over 70 eyes that needed to be built.

The Lands of Classic Castle: Uncovered

Disco86's Lego The Lands of Classic Castle: Uncovered

Lego has inspired many great MOCs. There are a few themes (Classic Space, Classic Castle, Star Wars, Middle Earth, Harry Potter, City) that have communities devoted to them. One of the most active communities is for the Classic Castle theme. Many Lego creations are created for this theme every day. One such place fans gather is at Classic-Castle. Over there is a unique fantasy world under development called the Lands of Classic Castle. An extremely detailed story and setting are being created piece by piece. The newest entry into the series is title “Uncovered” and is the creation of Disco86. Documenting an intense sea battle with Paul von Brickenstein.

Disco86's Lego The Lands of Classic Castle: Uncovered Detail

These castle theme Lego MOCs are usually extremely well done. Uncovered is no exception. With a relatively focused scene, every brick lends itself to the action. Some great Minifigures and photography are on display. The man overboard and the jumping attack are two great details. Also on display is the increasing trend of building amazing display frames.

The Madness from the Sea. The Great Cthulhu in Lego.

Carl Merriam's The Madness From The Sea, Lego Cthulhu

“It lumbered slobberingly into sight and gropingly squeezed Its gelatinous green immensity through the black doorway… The stars were right again, and what an age-old cult had failed to do by design, a band of innocent sailors had done by accident. After vigintillions of years great Cthulhu was loose again, and ravening for delight.”

— H.P Lovecraft, The Call of Cthulhu

Carl Merriam's The Madness From The Sea, Lego Cthulhu Back

Carl Merriam has created a horrifying Cthulhu Lego MOC. With a whole lot of specialized Lego pieces that one would not normally associate with a build like this. There are Velociraptor pieces, Medusa bodies, and weird tentacle bits. All of these are combined into a huge SNOT style figure. Which is instantly recognizable, and captures the terror of this monster.

Carl Merriam's The Madness From The Sea, Lego Cthulhu Face

A lot of the details really stand out. A lot of Lego builds have problems when viewed up close, but this Cthulhu looks even better when zoomed in. Especially the mouth area.

Carl Merriam's The Madness From The Sea, Lego Cthulhu Foot

The other stand out detail of “The Madness from the Sea” is the little Lego steam ship. The simplicity is a great contrast to the much more detailed Cthulhu. It also lends a sense of scale to the figure. This thing is supposed to be monstrously big. But, best of all is that this little detail adds so much to the story of this MOC.

Odysseus and the Sirens

lokosuperfluoLEGOman’ Odysseus And The Sirens

Homer’s the Odyssey is one of the greatest adventures of all time. Just look at that Lego Odysseus, he looks so happy to see those Sirens. Good thing he is tied up, and those sailors have wax in their ears. Who knows what kind of evil things those Sirens would do.

Odysseus and the Sirens is an MOC created by Flickr user lokosuperfluoLEGOman.

“One morning, he and his crew, reached a small island, where the half-bird, half-woman creatures, the sirens, dwelled. This monstrous creatures had the most beautiful voice any man could have heard, so when a ship passed in front of them, they sang to the mariners, leading them melodiously to their deaths in the sharp edges of the shore rocks. Odysseus, aware of that, told his crew to put on wax earplugs, so they couldn’t hear the sirens’ song. Besides, he told them to tie him to the mast, for he wanted to listen to the sirens’ song, being sure he will not be able to fulfill the sirens’ macabre plan.” – Homer’s The Odyssey
