Where’s the Rum? — A Lego Jack Sparrow

Where’s the Rum? — A Lego Jack Sparrow

Keep your booze locked up, this brick built Jack Sparrow is looking for some rum. This Lego bust of Captain Jack is created by Bryce Dempsey. Built as an entry into an Iron Builder challenge, specifically to use the Minifigure shooters in new and unique ways. You can see a lot of them being used to create the hair, mustache, and goatee. A great detail is the single white shooter. Who knew that these even came in other colors. For a brick built figure this is a difficult scale to work in. Just big enough to get some extra details, but not small enough to rely on super simplified caricature. The nose and eyes are extremely well done in this scale, combined they form an instantly recognizable Jack.

The Story Of A Lego Metamorphosis

The Story Of A Lego Metamorphosis

Gregor Samsa woke up one morning to find that he had transformed into a giant cockroach type bug, or as the story says a “monstrous vermin.” Maybe in some parallel universe Gregor also turned into Lego. Based off the classic novel by Franz Kafka, the Metamorphosis is a Lego MOC created by Water Snap. This build has a bunch of great details. The sheet has been built using a bunch of slopes and curved bricks, it creates a perfect wrinkled / used look. The bed is a simple frame with a very thin mattress which uses a whole lot of 1×1 flat round plates. A Lego pillow hiding behind the carapace is a great detail. The bug itself is well done. With Lego hoses used for antennae, and Lego wrenches to create the insect feet. This is one Lego creation that you probably don’t want hanging around the house. But if you do find a giant Lego insect in your house, make sure to feed it.

Guard Duty At Tensegrity Tower

Guard Duty At Tensegrity Tower, Lego MOC

Guard duty at Tensegrity Tower requires a certain amount of courage. To save on construction costs a local wizard can be employed to help build your next tower. Saving at least 50% of material costs. Just be on the look out, as any type of lateral force could knock you over at any time. Tensegrity Tower is a Lego MOC created by David Roberts. This is a very clean build, focusing on keeping your attention on the tower. The scenery is just a few plants, a couple of trees, and a short stone path. The addition of a foundation gives this tower a certain plausibility, and creates a target to attract your eyes to the center. The yellow stonework of the tower is a nod to the original castle theme. With just three chains holding up the upper portion. There must be some sort of magical portal leading up to the top, otherwise the guard is going to have a hard time getting down.

Get Ready To Blast Off With This Lego Tensegrity Sculpture

Get Ready To Blast Off With This Lego Tensegrity Sculpture

This Lego space fighter is landing, or maybe taking off in this Tensegrity Sculpture built by Lego Mfr. The optical illusion is a popular new trend in Lego MOCs, and there are some surprising creations. Some of the best are the ones that emphasize the space between the two parts. In this build, that would be the rocky outcropping and the hovering space fighter. Lego ropes and chains have been the favorite pieces to use for the key tension based structure. The ropes blend into the scenery better, while the chains work best when they are supposed to be seen. This build is one of the taller tensegrity creations out there. It uses a lot of SNOT techniques, and the end result would look great on its own. A quick question though, did the space ships engines start a fire, or is the ship hovering over an open lava pit?

Biker Advanced Recon Commando On Patrol

Biker Advanced Recon Commando On Patrol, Lego Star Wars

This is the “Clone Patrol” Lego vignette built by Josh. It depicts the busy streets of Coruscant from Star Wars, and one of the Biker Advanced Recon Commando’s (BARC) on patrol. The trooper is riding on one of the cutest and smallest speeders around. This build uses a lot of newer pieces. You can find transparent Nexo Knights shields being used for architectural details, and the new 1×1 flat triangle plates for the flooring. The transparent blue windows look like they are upside down Lego Dimensions function circles. Details like these are a great way to lend a science fiction look to the scene. These type of small vignettes are a great way to display your Star Wars Minifigures.

Ambush At The Sith Temple – The Old Republic Lego

Ambush At The Sith Temple - The Old Republic Lego

The Old Republic is a part of Star Wars that is often overlooked. This time period is currently being explored in the MMO video game. The setting of which takes place thousands of years before the Star Wars films. BobDeQuatre has created a Lego MOC based on the Old Republic called “Ambush at the old Sith temple on Takodana.” The planet Takodana has recently been seen in the Force Awakens. In this scene the forest type planet is the location of a hidden Sith temple. A neat detail with this build is the lighting built into the Lightsabers. Specifically they are the Lightailing brand LED lightsabers, which look great. Featuring Minifigures of Nidara Ludimi, Darth Severus, Nell Catagaan, and Grayman. There is a whole backstory for these characters that BobDeQuatre has posted with these photos. Who will win, probably the good guys!

Super Mario Lego Gets Some Power Ups!

Super Mario Lego Gets Some Power Ups!

Lego revealed some new details about their upcoming Super Mario theme. The bluetooth enabled Mario figure will be getting a variety of Power-Up Packs. These represent a small selection of the various suits that Mario has worn through the years. There is the original power up, the Fire Suit from Super Mario Bros (1985). A bit more recent is the Propeller Suit form the New Super Mario Bros (2009). The Cat Suit from Super Mario 3D World (2013). And the most recent, the Builder Suit which first appeared in Super Mario Maker (2015). Each one of these power ups give the Lego Mario some new powers. For instance the Cat Suit lets Mario earn coins by climbing up walls. It also seems that these packs also include unique sounds and animations. If this theme takes off the next round of Power-Ups should be interesting. Something from Super Mario Odyssey perhaps? Lego has a release date set for August 1st for these, so get saving now!

It’s Time To Wake Up With A Lego Alarm Clock

It's Time To Wake Up With A Lego Alarm Clock

“Hey! It’s time to wake up! Don’t make me get loud.” — That is probably what this Lego Alarm Clock is yelling out every morning. This MOC is created by Vincent’s LEGO Creation. This cartoony timepiece features a mix of clock parts. It has digital LCD parts for the eyes / goggles. The round body of a traditional clock. The huge brass bells of an old fashioned alarm. Plus the clock has a mouth, arms, and hands (and large hammers in those hands). All of which are needed for it to perform its job to the highest standards. The shapes here are all well done. The feet have a great design, and the roundness of the clock is great too. It is not a perfect round Lego circle, as a few parts needed to be fastened onto it. I’m afraid what will happen if someone pushes the snooze button!

Take A Spin With This Lego Solar System

Take A Spin With This Lego Solar System

The solar system is a magnificent display of physics and gravity. Huge planets spinning around the sun, each in their own orbit. Somehow not hitting each other in the process. Models that show how the solar system moves over time (an Orrery) can be extremely complicated. This Lego MOC of the Solar System is created by Thomas Rodger. There is a lot of math involved in trying to get the speeds of the planets as accurate as possible. And, that is with out Pluto! The designer has figured that this Lego Orrery is about 96.5% accurate. It uses one power functions motor to drive everything, which adds up to be about 4,000 Lego pieces. There are instructions on how to build this yourself that have been made available, but if you need to buy everything it will cost around $350-$600. Even though a lot of the pieces are common and cheap, there are some extremely rare ones found in the gear rack system. A very interesting note, is that brand new gears are needed. As any wear and tear will effect how this model works. Make sure to check out the video to see it in action!

You can find out more about this model, and how to get instructions on how to build it over here: https://rebrickable.com/mocs/MOC-38774/jollyrodger/8-planet-solar-system/

A Circular Rainbow Lego Creation

A Circular Rainbow Lego Creation

This is the Circular Rainbow, also known as Halo, created by Azurekingfisher. The Lego MOC is exclusively made up of Lego tree leaves. In the recent past, these elements have been released in an increasing number of neat colors. Some of these colors are really hard to find. This mobile style creation is balanced and held up with only the thinnest string. The inner core is a clever sphere made out out leaves. The outer Halo is uses an incredible amount of pieces, and are all held together with with their own stud connections. A very tricky build, as the plastic these pieces are made with do not have the strongest grip. It looks like the slightest bump can cause the whole build to self destruct in a glorious and colorful explosion. The end result, which looks like a planet, is actually better for our environment than most Lego creations. As most of these pieces are now made out of biodegradable plastics.
